Approximately 17 million* women are struggling with Lipedema in the US and the condition is almost exclusively seen in women. It is identified by an unusual, symmetric accumulation of fat in the lower body. As the disease progresses, pain, tenderness, and swelling increases while mobility decreases.

Dr. Marcia Byrd has been performing water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL) for over 15 years. WAL type liposuction has been proven effective for treatment of lipedema and Dr. Byrd is one of the few surgeons in the United States who understands lipedema and who can successfully help those suffering from this disease through the water-jet assisted liposuction procedure. This is the only treatment that appears to be effective in reducing the build-up of fatty tissue associated with lipedema.

Dr. Byrd tells of one of her patients she treated for lipedema, “These are before and after photos of a lady with stage 3 lipedema without lymphedema. Her symptoms mainly involved difficulty with ambulation and pain in her knees with very little pain in the soft tissues or other joints. She has had three WAL (water-jet assisted liposuction) procedures on her legs, the first of which was one year ago. These photos show much improvement and demonstrate a realistic outcome for a stage 3 patient. She was diligent in her post op MLD and use of compression garments which drastically aided her recovery and improved her outcome. She still has pain in her knees as expected since there was significant damage to the joints before surgery. She plans to have bilateral knee replacement in a few months.”

Dr. Byrd comments “Sometimes we forget the real reasons we do liposuction. Our primary goals are 1) To eliminate or reduce the pain, 2) To stop the progression and 3) To improve ambulation. Cosmetic changes are nice though!”
