It's Not Your Fault!

Revision Surgery

Unfortunately, there is no medical treatment that typically results in complete resolution of lipedema. Surgical options for lipedema include liposuction and lipectomy (direct removal of fat). Many major medical organizations have listed liposuction as the only effective treatment for lipedema. Liposuction and surgical excision actually remove fat cells in the calve, leg, thigh, abdomen, and arms. Once fat cells are removed there is less stress placed on lymphatics and blood vessels. Dr. Marcia Byrd utilizes a variety of liposuction techniques to remove stubborn and scarred fatty tissue.

Lipedema surgery has been found to have tremendous results in helping to alleviate the pain of lipedema and allow the patient to move around with greater ease. These are the top goals for having lipedema surgery. Of course most of Dr. Byrd’s patients hope to have some positive cosmetic results and they do. Before doing surgery on lipedema patients, Dr. Byrd explains that the results may not meet the patient’s cosmetic goals and it’s usually because the patient has unrealistic expectations. Dr. Byrd does her best to explain possible outcomes to lipedema ladies as well as the top goals for having lipedema surgery:

To alleviate pain
To gain greater mobility

About a year after a patient has completed her lipedema surgeries, Dr. Byrd will have them return for a follow up visit. If at that time she feels she can gain a better outcome, she will do a revision lipedema surgery.

Recently she was the guest host for Lipedema Awareness month and participated in a virtual conference to answer FAQ’s from the audience. Here is a video segment about Revision Lipedema Surgery:
